Our 2023 Alaska Journey

 

We are Ron and Terrie Ames. We live on a mountain in Colorado. In 2004, we purchased our first Montana fifth wheel, and joined the Montana Owner’s Club the same year. While attending the first Montana rally, we started hearing people talk about taking their Montana to Alaska. Interesting! So, a few years later they started having an Alaska round table at the rallies. We attended and we were hooked. In 2014, we actually did it. We took 95 days and 13,000 miles to see much of the state along with the Icefield Parkway, Washington and Oregon with Terrie’s sister. This time we are dragging Ron and Rhonda Marlin along on another adventure to Alaska, ending at the 2023 Montana Rally. If you want, you can follow along with our adventures as we prepare and then travel our way to the 49th (and largest) state. We hope you enjoy our story.

Fairbanks, Alaska

 We are spending some time (a week and a half) in Fairbanks.  We started our visit at our second Boondockers Welcome stop and planned to visit a glass repair shop to check in on Ron and Rhonda's crinkled kitchen window.  The good news is it will make it to Indiana in September without any further work.  The bad news is that when we went to leave we had no trailer brakes.  Traced it back to a brake bracket that hadn't been torqued properly when we had our suspension upgraded.  This lead to losing all of the bolts holding one of the brake calipers on and then the caliper losing shoes, cylinder and fluid. The parts are almost all here and we will put it back together next week. It is not stopping us from enjoying our visit. Fairbanks is the second largest city in Alaska, located in Interior Alaska.  It is among the warmest areas in summer and coldest in the winter.  It is also home to Terrie's sister, Leslie and her husband J.R. Homer, Cooper Landing and Valdez

 I posted about Ron and Rhonda yesterday.  Today, I will get back to the trip. We are currently along side of the road in Valdez - by choice.  Good sky for Solar and StarLink.  So, let's dive in.  The last post was from Seward, where we picked up another pair of Montana owners - Terry and Diane Hansen.  They are fulltime RVers out of Rock Springs, Wyoming.  In fact, we are hanging out with them in Valdez right now. In Homer, we camped out on the spit, a piece of land that is 1/4 mile wide by 4.5 mile long piece of ground that sticks out into Kachemack Bay.  This is also where we knew something was amiss with Ron. I got to kayak fish while here and we had the ocean out our back window.  That is where the salmon taunted me from afar. Our view on the Spit Homer has a beautiful harbor. Missing Our Traveling Companions

  Well, this is certainly not the type of post I thought I would be writing on this trip. We were having a great time till we were leaving Seward for Homer. Ron Marlin wasn’t feeling well and went to a walk in clinic in Homer. They did tests and told him he needed to get home as soon as possible. His condition is very serious and we drove them to the airport last Monday. He is currently in the hospital in Arkansas. Rhonda is by his side.  After reviewing all of the options to get their truck and camper home, Ron and Mary Lichtenberg flew up from Omaha and spent some time with us orienting themselves to the truck and camper. They are taking the camper back to Arkansas. When you look up friend in the dictionary, you see Ron and Mary’s picture. Great friends and very giving people. New friends, Terry and Diane Hansen, helped find a camping spot to rest before getting Ron and Rhonda to Anchorage.
