Fairbanks, Alaska

We are spending some time (a week and a half) in Fairbanks.  We started our visit at our second Boondockers Welcome stop and planned to visit a glass repair shop to check in on Ron and Rhonda's crinkled kitchen window.  The good news is it will make it to Indiana in September without any further work.  The bad news is that when we went to leave we had no trailer brakes.  Traced it back to a brake bracket that hadn't been torqued properly when we had our suspension upgraded.  This lead to losing all of the bolts holding one of the brake calipers on and then the caliper losing shoes, cylinder and fluid. The parts are almost all here and we will put it back together next week. It is not stopping us from enjoying our visit. Fairbanks is the second largest city in Alaska, located in Interior Alaska.  It is among the warmest areas in summer and coldest in the winter.  It is also home to Terrie's sister, Leslie and her husband J.R. Lewis. This area was established as a gold minin

North to Alaska, the Rush Is On

Well, we made it to Alaska on June 7th, so it has been over a week since the last blog.  So, hang onto your hat as we travel from Dawson City, Yukon to Delta Junction - the end of the Alaskan Highway. In order to leave Dawson City, we had to cross the Yukon River, by Ferry.  They put both of our rigs (two 37' fifth wheels and trucks) onto the ferry at once. Here we are waiting in line to board the ferry. It runs 24/7 until the river ices over. This is the ferry load ahead of us, including a dump truck and Cat 966 Wheel Loader. We crossed into Alaska at one of the more remote locations, along the Top of the World Highway. Two Montana's across the border on the Top of the World Highway. Our first stop was Chicken, Alaska. Of course, we had to have chicken pot pie calzone's (not as good as their old sheets of pot pie). And a Cinnamon Roll for breakfast in the morning. We grabbed a nice wayside with a great view. We belong to a program called Boondockers Welcome.  Homeowners wi

Whitehorse to Dawson City

We are at our last stop  before crossing the border into Alaska.  We made a turn off of the Alaskan Highway, headed toward Dawson City, Yukon Territories.  Our stay in Dawson City has been a highlight.  Our last trip in 2014 we did not go up this way because of horror stories about the road.  Tomorrow will be a new experience, as we put the trailers on a ferry to cross the Yukon River. A lot has happened since the last update.  I took a relatively easy drive and turned it into an adventure.  It was like Goldilocks and the three bears.  We intended to stop around Pelly Crossing and boondock.  Well, the wayside had wheels off the ground after leveling.  So, we headed north looking for another spot.  Found a nice looking spot by a new bridge. I drove down cautiously, but not cautiously enough.  Buried the front right tire.  After removing the e-bikes, rack, shoveling out the front tire and attaching tow straps, we were back on our way. Finally found a wonderful spot at a rest area near G
